Why Is My Car Overheating When Idling in Suffolk County?

Idle overheating is usually an airflow or coolant circulation problem. Although it’s probably not a problem with the engine itself, it’s something you need to have fixed as soon as possible to prevent severe engine damage.

Common Causes of Overheating in Traffic or When Stopped


Your radiator uses air passing over a network of fins to lower the temperature of your engine’s coolant fluid. If your temperature gauge rises when sitting in traffic or idling at a stop, it’s usually because something’s preventing air from hitting the radiator, or the coolant in the system isn’t doing its job.


  • The Radiator Fan is Faulty:  A fan failure causes overheating at idle and when you’re moving at slow speed. Try starting your car when it’s parked and move to the exterior and listen for fan noise at the front grille. If the fan doesn’t kick in and the temperature keeps climbing, you will need a replacement fan or service to check the temperature sensor, fuse, or relay.
  • The Thermostat is Faulty:  The thermostat regulates the amount of coolant flowing through the radiator, based on temperature. If it’s stuck or otherwise faulty, coolant stops circulating, and heat builds up rapidly.
  • Coolant Levels are Low: If the coolant (antifreeze) is low from a leak or slow evaporation, the engine will heat up in all driving conditions, but you will notice it more while idling. You can check the coolant reservoir when your engine is cold and top it up as needed. However, constant coolant level decreases suggest a leak, which will require an inspection and radiator service with a Suffolk County auto mechanic.
  • The Water Pump Isn’t Working: The water pump moves coolant through the system. If it fails, or the impeller wears down, nothing will circulate through the system. Heat will concentrate in the engine block, sending your temperature gauge up and likely triggering an overheating warning or check engine light.
  • The Radiator is Damaged: Sometimes the problem is the radiator itself. Bent fins, rust, and sludge buildup can all decrease a radiator’s efficiency. A visual inspection can reveal any obvious damage. A local auto repair shop can check the radiator more thoroughly to see if it needs repair, replacement, or a simple radiator flush to remove contaminants and get the coolant moving freely.

In rarer cases, a blown fuse, faulty relay, or failed temperature sensor can cause your cooling system to perform erratically or not at all.
